видео «Despite and In Spite Of — How to use them — British English»

There is no difference in meaning or in use of the use of these two words. Now, we need to remember that they are both

prepositions.OK, so we need to use them as prepositions. So, let`s look at some structures:

DESPITE + NOUN

Notice you can interchange despite for in spite of. I`m just using despite as it`s shorter. OK, so for example:

Despite problems he managed to do it.
Despite the cost I bought it.
Despite the heat he continued working.
Despite the difficulty he didn`t stop.

OK, so, despite, the noun then the clause.
OK, second construction is the

DESPITE + A POSSESSIVE PRONOUN + A NOUN

Despite his problems he continued working.
Despite his abilities he couldn`t do it.
Despite his money they wouldn`t let him buyit.
Despite his importance they wouldn`t let him in.

OK, so that`s quite easy. Now let`s look at another one. So, when we`re using verbs we need to use the Gerund. OK,

DESPITE + GERUND

Despite ****having a lot of money**** they didn`t let him in.
Despite being important they weren`t impressed.
Despite living in Spain he didn`t speak Spanish. OK, so Despite plus Gerund. Now, we need to look at two other

constructions:

DESPITE + OBJECT PRONOUN + GERUND

OK, so, for example:

Despite me having a lot of money…

We can also make this using the possessive.

DESPITE + POSSESSIVE PRONOUN + GERUND

Despite my having a lot of money.

We can use both of this. I tend more normally to use the second with the possessive. OK,

Despite me being there they didn`t talk to me.
Despite my being there they didn`t talk to me.
OK
Despite him living in Spain for ten years
I think in this one
Despite his living in Spain for ten years he didn`t speak Spanish.
Despite my working in the building they wouldn`t let me in.
Despite me working in the building they wouldn`t let me in.
Again, I prefer the second.
OK, there you you go. That`s despite and in spite of.

So, let`s just look at it again:

  • The Prepositions
  • Despite + Noun (despite problems)
  •  Despite + Possessive Pronoun + Noun (despite my problems)
  • Despite + Gerund (despite having problems)
  • Despite + Object Pronoun + Gerund (despite me having problems)
     and then plus possessive pronoun
  • Despite + Possessive Pronoun + Gerund (despite my having problems).

Я не удержался и спросил у Алекса, сделавшего это видео:

«1:34 Despite + Gerund.

Am I right to say we could add Him so that to get «Despite HIM having money they didn`t let him in»?».

На что британец ответил:

«Correct

despite him / his having».

На нижеприведённый вопрос англоговорящего мексиканца, о том,  используется ли despite of/in spite of касательно событий будущего:

«So despite is something regardless it happened, Not to be used as a future statement? I would like to know, englih is my

second language and I am a bit confused here»,

Alex iswearenglish ответил, касательно какого времени может употребляться despite of/in spite of:

«Despite means regardless, but it can be used for future statements.

Despite his wealth they are not going to let him become a member.

However the despite normally refers to something past or present.

Despite (some past or present situation) there (is was will be) a situation.

Despite the rain (past or present), we went, are going, will go to the park.».
