WHERE’STHEGAP?

Metro, tube, underground, subway. People there use the English language but the vocabulary varies. They even teach their doors to speak specifically!

Where is the gap?

Now, I wonder what the “gap” /ɡæp/
means. The gap between the doors? Or
between the doors and the passenger? Or
between the car and the platform? What is
this mysterious gap?

Как по-английски “варёная кукуруза”

Варёная кукуруза она и в Лондоне остаётся тёплой и вкусной, а сырую у них не едят. Именно поэтому на месте британцев было бы лучше назвать её чем то вроде “boiled corn”. Как перевести с английского boiled corn? Варёная кукуруза.
Но, Томас сказал, что продавцы на лондонских улицах называют её “corn on the cob”. А ещё, им всё равно, вареная она или недоваренная: “we don’t specify if it’s cooked or not”.
Странные преграды придумали себе британцы. Вот зачем называть её “кукуруза на початке”?
Ответ, вероятно, в том, что есть кукуруза консервированная и прочие её кулинарные формы.
Но, мне до сих пор не понятно, используют ли британцы то самое слово maize, которым называют царицу полей в словарях.

P.S. А ведь всего навсего захотелось покушать кукурузы. Зашёл на кухню и тут же принялся вспоминать, как называется еда. В итоге, доразмышлялся до того, что обнаружил её холодной.

My student visited the USA

This spring my student, Oleg Orlov, realised his dream to visit the Great Canyon. He had spent half a year studying English with me (and, also, he had done some hard work before our course). Then he came to New York, and took a plane to Los Angeles, and there he took a flight to Miami. Of course, he complained that sometimes he could not understand some people. He said they spoke too fast and used unknown words. But, it didn`t prevent Oleg from meeting with condors. Here are some photos of his dream`s:
